Yesterday, during London Fashion Week, shoe-designer Nicholas Kirkwood (signing sketches, above) unveiled his Oz-inspired footwear designs ahead of the Disney film’s release on 8 March.
A prequel to the 1939 Wizard of Oz, the film follows James Franco as the small-time magician with a big choice to make. It also stars Mila Kunis as Theodora (the Wicked Witch of the West), Rachel Weisz as Evanora (the Wicked Witch of the East) and Michelle Williams as Glinda, the Good Witch.
Kirkwood, who last month won the British Fashion Council/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund 2013, has created a capsule collection of four shoes in honour of each of the film’s magical leading characters: a scarlet and black bootie for Theodora, a strappy black sandal for Evanora, a gorgeous silver sandal for Glinda (which look very bridal) and a zigzagged men’s brogue for Oz himself. “I’m not averse to a bit of fantasy at all,” Kirkwood told WWD. “I had to create a shoe that would work well for each character, the good fairy and two wicked witches. It was great fun.”
The shoes will be showcased at Selfridges in London from 1 March as part of the department store’s Shoe Carnival, which will include window displays featuring the Yellow Brick Road and Emerald City (which would no doubt make Mr Selfridge very proud!). The store will also host original costumes and props from the film – including some actual yellow bricks – alongside Kirkwood’s shoes as well as holding magical events including ‘shoestrology’ readings and serving potions such as shoe-inspired cocktails.
The Selfridges Shoe Carnival will run from 1 March to 21 April, 2013. Oz the Great and Powerful is released on 9 April.
