Yesterday Disney showcased a range of all-new Haunted Mansion items that will be sure to turn the happiest house into a haunted home. Set to be released in the US Disney parks over the coming months, this collection draws its inspiration from the nooks and crannies that visitors to the Mansion may not always notice but that give it an authentically creepy vibe.
For example, the panelling in the space following the ‘stretching’ room inspired the base of the candelabra, above, whilst the photo frame below is, of course, based on the plaque that sits by the front of the Mansion. However, such attention to detail comes at a price: legend has it that in order to take accurate reference photographs for these pieces, members of the Park Merchandise development team were sent into the Mansion early one morning before the park opened (the press release didn’t mention if they all made it back alive.)
As well as the candelabra and frame there is also an hourglass with specially-included purple sand to match the Mansion’s color scheme, a bat bottle topper, tarot cards and a music box with Madame Leota’s face engraved on it that plays Grim Grinning Ghosts, which we are absolutely dying to get hold of! And finally, so you may fully furnish your very own Haunted Mansion, there is also a coaster set, candy dish, cushion and throw (see slideshow below).
Whilst most of these items would, naturally, be perfect for Halloween (no doubt the candy dish was created precisely for the purpose of serving Trick or Treaters) we can see ourselves using many of these items every day, especially the snuggly-looking throw, below, which would be perfect for a Sunday afternoon rest…in peace.
At over forty years old, the Haunted Mansion is one of Disney’s most iconic rides and has a, er, die-hard fanbase in its own right. While many park rides prompt affection – everyone knows the chorus to It’s A Small World, whilst Pirates of the Caribbean is now a major movie franchise – the Haunted Mansion has managed to inspire numerous fans without a catchy song or successful film (we can probably all agree that the 2003 Haunted Mansion film starring Eddie Murphy was not exactly successful). As such, when new merchandise is announced it tends to sell out pretty quickly.
The Haunted Mansion homewares will be released between March and June at Disneyland California and Walt Disney World Florida. They will also be available online at the Disney Store. Be sure to keep an eye out for them because if you miss any of these fabulously freaky items you may kick yourself… or the bucket….
