A very merry un-birthday to Tom Binns, whose Alice in Wonderland collection was released just over two years ago, in February 2010. Drawing inspiration from the tea party scene as well as characters such as the Cheshire cat and Red Queen, he created over forty pieces (including a Disney Couture range at a lower price point) for the collection to coincide with the release of Tim Burton’s live-action version. At the time Binns confessed, “I could easily have made 200.”
This is largely thanks to the research Binns conducted whilst designing the line. “I read the book and some articles on the psychology of the story,” Binns explained. “The story is full of very iconic images, so it wasn’t difficult to find symbols that represent the stories – like the Mad Hatter’s top hat and the watch.” These motifs are clearly echoed in his jewellery, which feature layers of chains adorned with adorable miniature top hats, watches and teacups, almost like wearing a dolls house. On a side note, we’re not sure Alice herself would approve of this Throwback Thursday post. As she says in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, “It’s no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then!”
