You don’t need a fairy godmother for fairytale fashion on a budget and, to prove it, price comparison website MoneySupermarket.com issued a blogger challenge we couldn’t resist: create three outfits for three different occasions, each coming in at under £200.
Want to look like a princess and still be so Money Supermarket you don’t even know it? Read on!
Inspiration: Minnie Mouse | Trend: Pop Art | Total: £129.40
Topshop’s red and white tube skirt is the perfect way to channel Minnie’s trademark polkadots while working the new midi-length pencil shape, a skirt that was all over the SS13 catwalks. Add Uniqlo’s graffiti-print Minnie Mouse tee and Iron Fist’s yellow wedges for a look that’s both bold and beautiful.
Finally, if you dare, top the entire thing off with a Maison Michel-inspired mouse ears headband (also from Topshop) and bask in your 15 minutes of fashion fame.
Inspiration: Ariel | Trend: Aquamarine | Total: £159.49
Ariel’s aqua hues were a hit during SS13 Fashion Week, especially at Alberta Ferretti, where models stepped out in a palette of blues and greens while bubbles were projected onto the backdrop behind them.
For the perfect holiday outfit, make like a mermaid by mixing and matching shades of aquamarine: an H&M denim skirt in green, a pair of Vince Camuto blue sandals and French Connection’s turquoise gummy bag (perfect for the beach!) will ensure you’re the catch of the day. Make sure the outfit doesn’t go overboard by punctuating with pops of contrasting colour, such as Topshop’s violet bikini, a Claire’s Accessories flower clip and a pink mermaid necklace from independent jewellery designer I Love Crafty.
Now all you need is a hot crustacean band and your holiday will be complete!
H&M Skirt: £7.99 | Topshop Ultra Violet Plunge Bikini Top: £13 | French Connection Sandy Pop Gummy Shopper: £65 | I Love Crafty Necklace: £16 | Fynn Vince Camuto Sandals: £55 | Claire’s Accessories Flower Hair Clip: £2.50
Inspiration: Cinderella | Trend: Romantic | Total: £199.74
Cinderella is a by-word for romance (seriously – we re-watched the film over the weekend and spent at least 6o minutes of it sighing wistfully) so there’s no better inspiration for this trend than Cindy’s very own fairytale frock.
Ethereal dresses in pretty pastels dominated the SS13 catwalks but, thanks to H&M’s Conscious Exclusive collection, you no longer have to become a Spring Breaker to get your hands on an Oscar-worthy gown. Our absolute favourite piece from the collection is this frothy dream of a dress, which is not only made out of 100% recycled materials but can be purchased for the princely sum of £149.99, leaving you with just enough change for a mesmerising pair of hologram heels from Forever21 and a Tatty Devine ‘glass slippers’ necklace.
Perfect for a summer party, prom or even a wedding, this enchanting ensemble will ensure you look magical until long after midnight.
