Scare Wear: Monsters University Fashion Collection

If working on your fitness sounds more frightening than fun, this is the sportswear collection for you!

Last year Disney Consumer Products partnered with LA-based Otis College of Art and Design to mentor a group of fashion design students and challenged them to each come up with athletic apparel inspired by characters from Monsters University.

As well as being monstrously stylish the clothes had to be sustainable (incorporating objects like mops, sponges and repurposed materials) and appropriate both on and off the track. Oh and there was one other thing: the designers had to incorporate their chosen monster without actually using the character’s image in their designs.

Thirteen students worked on the project in three team, selecting Sulley, Mike (above) and newcomer Art as the inspirations for their designs. Researching the project was a scream and included a visit to the Walt Disney Studios to meet Disney artists and learn more about each character’s personality.

Last month the students revealed their designs in a scare off walk off during the Otis Scholarship and Benefit Fashion Show in Beverly Hills (above). Jessica Choi, a junior at Otis majoring in Fashion, was crowned the winner with her incredible purple Art-inspired collection (below), which included a striped long-sleeve t-shirt, leggings, tie-die bubble skirt (want!) and a parka-style sleeveless jacket. Didn’t she capture the fluffy free-spirited Art perfectly with the colour scheme and fabrics?

From today, if you’re in the Hollywood area, you can check out all three collections at the El Capitan theatre until 2nd August (below).

If only these Monsters University clothes were available to buy, we’re sure they’d be a monster hit!

And Monsters University is out today (in the US) – woop! Will you be checking it out?

  1. Hi great article!
Just wanted to let you know though that the collection wasn’t done by 3 students…each garment was made by 1 student. It was a team of 13 students that worked together to make it all happen 🙂
