One of the reasons we love fashion is because we can fantasize about wearing all those fabulous outfits while waltzing with our Prince Charming. And it looks like we’re not the only ones who turn to fairytales for inspiration. At last week’s New York Fashion Week we spotted a couple of Disney Princess ensembles, a pretty pixie and a few other familiar faces walking the runway at Manhattan’s Lincoln Center for the Spring Summer 2014 collections. Check them all out below!
1. Marissa Webb – Aurora’s Peasant Outfit
We’ve always loved Aurora’s peasant girl outfit – almost more than her pink/blue ballgown. The simple shirt, flared skirt and super sexy black corset combo looks just as good in a forest as it does at fashion week – now that’s what we call versatile.
2. Oscar de la Renta – Cinderella’s Ball Dress
When the Fairy Godmother is AWOL there’s only one number every Disney Princess should have on speed dial – Oscar de la Renta’s. His default setting is Disney Princess gowns, whether they’re for the Academy Awards or actual Disney Princesses, so we weren’t surprised to see at least one on the catwalk during his SS14 show.
3. Josie Natori – Belle’s Gold Gown
There’s nothing like a liquid gold gown to turn your beast into a prince. Josie Natori’s version is less fussy than Belle’s layered original but would look perfect on a red carpet. In fact, we can totally see Jennifer Lawrence rocking this at the Oscars – and her Best Actress award would be the perfect accessory!
4. Donna Karan – Pocahontas’ Dress
As Pocahontas demonstrated so well, you can paint with all the colors of the wind but nothing looks as stunning as a simple, tan, one-shouldered dress. Donna Karan’s elongated version would look stunning by the pool on a hot summer night. Love it!
5. Maki Oh – Ariel’s Bra & Tail
If we didn’t know any better we’d think that Maki Oh snuck a Disneybounding Ariel outfit into her Spring Summer collection. At first glance it may look like a coincidence – a sea-green pencil skirt and shimmery bralet – but are those fins we see on the model’s arms?!
6. Catherine Malandrino – Jasmine’s Hood and Harem Pants
A hood and a pair of harem pants are all Jasmine needed when she stepped outside the palace walls alone for the first time. Catherine Malandrino has gone one step further and turned the two items into one convenient garment. Her hooded, harem-panted jumpsuit is perfect for keeping your hair contained during a magic carpet ride. We think Jas would dig it.
7. Jill Stuart – Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland Dress
Jill Stuart is the final word in girly goth, so it’s no surprise she channeled Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland during her RTW show. Baby blue frills trimmed with black turn a Lolita-esque frock into a Wonderland-worthy dress. This would be the ideal outfit for an unbirthday party.
8. Zac Posen – Tinker Bell’s Strapless Frock
Ah, Zac. He’s best known for his floor-length, show-stopping gowns but Tink must have sprinkled some fairy dust over him because we love this simple, strapless, knee-length concoction in mint-green. It’s magical!
9. Norma Kamali – Jack Skellington’s Suit
Jack Skellington’s pinstripe pantsuit looks chic at any time of year, so it’s no surprise Norma Kamali incorporated a version into her Spring Summer 2014 collection. We like how she’s given it a sexy edge by jettisoning the shirt.
10. Thom Browne – Hatbox Ghost’s Get Up
If you want something a bit scarier for Halloween, however, look no further than Thom Browne’s ghostly offering. The hair is channelling Bride of Frankenstein, the lips echo the Joker, but that outfit – and bag – are pure Haunted Mansion. In fact, wouldn’t it be a scream if you wore this outfit with Dooney & Bourke’s Haunted Mansion handbag!
And just because…
Despite their ethereal name, Creatures of the Wind didn’t demonstrate any Disney on the catwalk but the brand’s designer, Christopher Peters, took a bow afterwards while wearing this Snow White tee. Maybe he’s hinting about their Autumn Winter 2015 collection? Guess we’ll have to wait until next year to find out!
