Long before Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw became the poster girl for designer kicks, there was Cinderella, whose fairy-made glass slippers remain the envy of shoe addicts everywhere.
Now Disney has commissioned eleven designers – including Jimmy Choo, Charlotte Olympia and Bradshaw’s favourite Manolo Blahnik – to re-imagine Cindy’s slippers in honour of the new live-action version starring Lily James as the Disney Princess herself (above, wearing Choos’ version). “I think every girl desires a Cinderella moment in their lives,” says Sandra Choi, creative director of Jimmy Choo. “This story ignites a love affair and fascination with shoes that never dies. The power they have to transform is instilled from a young age and the fantasy remains alive forever. I wanted to create a shoe that felt magical, with alluring sparkle and a feminine, timeless silhouette evoking those childhood emotions.”
The collection also includes Christian Louboutin’s butterfly peep-toes, which he created two years ago in honour of the animated film’s re-release and could only be won by entering a competition. This time, however, all the shoes will be available to order at the world’s top department stores including Harrods in London and Saks in the US. The full collection went on display last week during the film’s world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival – check it out below.
A number of the designers have worked on fairytale footwear before. Stuart Weitzman previously worked on a (non-Disney) Cinderella shoe collection, while both Nicholas Kirkwood and Jerome C Rousseau designed heels inspired by 2013’s Oz The Great and Powerful. “Cinderella has both delicate and strong qualities as a character,” says Kirkwood. “The moment of transformation emphasises both and gave me the design inspiration to create a piece that spoke to the film’s magic.”
As for the shoes James wears in the film? They were actually crystal (apparently it’s more glittery than glass) made by Swarovski. InStyle UK snapped a pic of them (below) at the film festival but sadly they’re not available to buy 😥
